What is Triple Glazing?
Triple glazing uses three panes of glass in a window instead of the standard one or two. It’s often marketed as the ultimate solution for insulation and energy efficiency. But is it the right choice for UK homes — and more importantly, is it worth the cost?
At Astraframe, we specialise in premium double glazing, and at this time, we do not offer triple glazing. Here’s why.
Is Triple Glazing Worth It?
The idea of triple glazing sounds great on paper — better insulation, less noise, improved energy savings. But in real-world conditions, especially in the UK climate, the actual benefits over modern double glazed windows are often marginal.
✔ Energy Efficiency
While triple glazing can reduce heat loss slightly more than double glazing, the difference isn’t always noticeable in a well-insulated UK home. Our A-rated double glazed units already meet or exceed energy efficiency standards for most properties.
✔ Soundproofing
Triple glazing can help reduce noise, but window frame material and proper installation matter just as much — if not more. Our double glazed units, paired with quality uPVC frames, offer excellent noise reduction for typical suburban and urban areas.
✔ Security
Yes, triple glazed windows are thicker — but high-security locking systems and reinforced glass in modern double glazing provide more than enough protection for most homes.
The Cost of Triple Glazing
Triple glazing can cost anywhere from 30% to 50% more than double glazing — with individual windows often exceeding £1,000 depending on size and specification.
And that’s a key reason we currently don’t offer triple glazed windows at Astraframe. In our experience, the extra cost simply doesn’t deliver enough benefit for most homeowners in the UK.
Disadvantages of Triple Glazing
- Higher Cost with Limited ROI: You may not see a significant return in energy savings.
- Heavier Units: Triple glazing adds considerable weight to frames, which can limit design options.
- Reduced Solar Gain: It can actually block some of the beneficial heat from sunlight in winter.
- Not Ideal for All Homes: In moderate climates like most of the UK, the benefits can be minimal.
